Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.): Focus on Buddhist Psychology

buddhist psychology graduate programs online

The doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in Buddhist Psychology is geared to promote Buddhist principles in the practice of psychotherapy, counseling, life coaching, and consulting. Buddhist psychology deals with the mental stress underlying suffering or dissatisfaction (Dukkha).

Students will experience the basic processes and tenets of Buddhism including the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. With these and other precepts, the Buddha offers guidance that seeks to overcome the mental afflictions. One major area is meditation which can provide relief from psychological disorders.

Recent psychological and scientific research especially in the areas of neurology and the mind lends support to the Buddha’s original conceptualizations.

The program offers a  pathway to incorporate various psychotherapies with the Buddhist approaches. For example, the graduate courses include integrating cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoanalytic theory with Buddhist psychology. Life-changing perspectives emerge along with amelioration of mental stress and disorders.

One major advantage at EISS is that we do not require a thesis or dissertation. On the other hand, we require a Capstone which is either a position paper or a research proposal. The Capstone is written in a professional style following APA guidelines. The classes are small in number which allows more effective communication and learning. The Ph.D. is a two-year program. EISS uses an asynchronous format which allows for great flexibility in terms of time and convenience. EISS is 100% online with no residency requirement.
